How to have an enriching lifestyle if you are a 40+ single woman?

If you are a woman who has crossed the 40th year of her life and is still single, and preferably without any children, then you must have been more than once asked to justify your choice to never get married. While more and more women are choosing to marry late or not marry at all, there is still a whole lot of stigma attached to single, unmarried woman and if you are in your 40s then most people automatically assume that the problem must be in you.

However, you need to realize that you can’t let the society decide for you. Yes, the society will most definitely judge the Lifestyle of a 40+ single woman. But you don’t have to be too hard on yourself or let the society make you believe that you have made the wrong choices.

Following are some suggested changes in the Lifestyle of a 40+ single woman:

  • Prioritize your health-While a proper diet and healthy lifestyle should be maintained at every stage, it is more so important when you are above 40. This is the time when a lot of changes take place in your body. If you have reached menopause, there will be major hormonal changes, which can impact your health. Osteoporosis, heart disease and breast cancer are very common in aging women. You need to start taking better care of yourself. Start eating healthy meals and develop a regular fitness regime. Practice stress control.

  • Travel – Go to all those places that you have wanted to see. Travelling can be an intellectually and spiritually stimulating experience. Take a trip to that exotic island you have wanted to go to or to that remote village in some part of the world. Go on a backpacking trip with your friends or tag along with some strangers. Experience the joy of travelling alone. Develop an interest in the local culture, open yourself up for new experience and make new friends.

  • Develop a new hobby– It’s never too late to learn something. You can probably take up that long-forgotten childhood goal. Have been thinking of learning Salsa or run marathons? Do it now. Try out new things. River rafting, parasailing, hiking, bungee jumping-there is a whole lot of adventures that you can explore.

  • Start writing regularly. You can keep a diary or start your own blog. Penning down your thoughts can be extremely satisfying. Blogging can also allow you to meet a number of new people who share similar interests.

  • Volunteer – Knowing that you have been making some contribution towards improving someone’s life can give you a new high in life. Join that neighboring animal shelter house or volunteer for some hours at an orphanage or old-age home. You can also join some NGO and travel to different places as a volunteer.

  • Spend more time with your friends. Reach out to all those people you have lost touch with along the way. Focus on improving the relationships you have in your life.

  • Take risks-You are most likely in a financially stable position by now. Don’t be averse to taking any risks. Wanted to start your own business or open a coffee shop of your own? Do it now.

  • Find ways to be even more productive in your professional life. Do the work that you love. If you feel like you are stuck in an uninspiring job, quit. Pursue your passions.

  • Get into a relationship if you want to.

This is certainly not an exhaustive list. But most importantly, keep in mind that your age shouldn’t define you. Don’t let the beauty and age-driven consumerist society make you believe that crossing the 40th milestone is something that makes you less significant. In fact you grow and evolve with every passing year. The key to your happiness is you. Figure out what makes you happy and go for it.
